DIY cleaner are better and safer for your home. Plus, you do not need to stock poisons in your house, just a few simple ingredients. I make a few different cleaners (glass, all purpose, disinfectant, wood, and tub/shower) along with my own laundry detergent. I have been making them for almost 7 years now so my “recipe” has been tweeked until perfect!
One thing I do recommend is to use a drop or two of food coloring in the cleaner. The tub/shower cleaner and the wood cleaner are easy to tell at a glance, but the other three (glass, all purpose, and disinfectant) are hard to tell apart. Put a drop or two of food coloring and problem solved (as long as you remember what color you made each cleaner).
Natural Tub and Shower Cleaner
- 3/4 cup baking soda
- 1 Tbs liquid castile soap
- water
Mix the baking soda and liquid castile soap and add just enough water to form a paste. Alternatively you can add enough water so that you can spray it from a spray bottle depending on how you like to clean your tub and shower. Spray or scrub it on then let it sit for 5-10 minutes then wipe it back off. It is super simple. If you make it thin enough to spray then you can use it as an “in-between” cleaner. Spray it after your shower and it will be rinsed off at the next shower. The paste is a little stronger if you need a big cleaning boost.
Where to find the Natural Tub and Shower Cleaner ingredients
I purchase the baking soda in a large bag at Costco. I tend to go through quite a bit so this works for me and it is pretty cheap. The best place I have found for liquid castile soap is Amazon (click here to see castile soap at Amazon). There are lots of different scents to choose from that way (or unscented) and the price is the best. You can always find it in a natural foods store in a pinch, but it tends to be pretty expensive. A little goes a long way, but I use it in almost all my cleaners. It is definitely worth getting a good castile soap. Dr. Bronners is my favorite.
