One of my favorite things to make when my kiddos started eating solid foods was their homemade baby cereal. It is super healthy and they can continue to eat it as the grow older. My recipe is adapted from the great baby book Super Baby Foods by Ruth Yaron. Please see the book to find age recommendations and was to customize it to your own needs.
Ingredients for Homemade Baby Cereal
- Ground Oats, Millet, Rice, or Barley
- 2 Egg yolks or 2 Tbs tofu
- 1-2 Tbs Fruit
- 2 Tbs Brewer's yeast
Directions to make Homemade Baby Cereal
I ground my own oats/millet/rice/barley. You can mix them together in whatever proportion you want. I tended to stick with 1-2 each time. The kiddos seemed to like oats and rice the most so I would usually pair one of those with millet or barley. Put the whole grains in a food processor or blender and blend for 2-3 minutes. It will be very noisy, but when it is done you have a nice powder you can make baby cereal with.
Boil one cup of water and add 4 Tbs of your ground grains mixture. Keep stirring because it boils over easily! Cook until it is thick (5 minutes or so). It will have the texture of cream of wheat.
Add the other ingredients and stir well.
When my kiddos just started eating this would make about four servings. I would serve one immediately and put the other three in storage containers in the fridge for the following days. As they got older it was only 2 servings so I would double it to do the same thing.
