How to clean a bathroom (the natural way)

I love a clean bathroom. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you look at it from a positive light), I hate chemicals and the chemical smell that comes with them. I also hate having those chemicals in my house while I have little ones running around. The only thing easier than trying to find a safe or high spot for your chemicals is keeping the chemicals out of your home completely. However, knowing how to clean a bathroom can become a little more difficult if you want to avoid chemicals.

So, I've learned how to clean a bathroom using natural products. Gone are the days where I turn the bathroom fan on, spray some chemicals on the sink or tub, scrub until my hand is sore, and then run from the room to get some air. Gone too are the lingering smells of bleach and fake lemon. A clean bathroom now smells like anything I want (I tend to gravitate toward lilac, but I have used lavender, orange, vanilla, cinnamon, a mix of the above, or something entirely different!)

So, just how do you clean a bathroom without using bleach, Windex, shower scrub, etc?

First, you learn what works when cleaning a bathroom.

Then you perfect it.

And, when you have it down, you share how to clean a bathroom (the natural way)!

How to Clean a Bathroom Tip: Daily Cleaning

You know those nifty Kleenex box holders that you can put on a shelf in your bathroom. Well, get one (or if you already have one, try using it for this tip)! Don't use it for tissues though (if you use it for tissues then this tip may not work for you). The tissue box holder is going to be your own secret spot to keep cleaning cloths and to help scent your bathroom. A clean bathroom always starts with a nice smell.

  • Get Small Washcloths. Regular washcloths are 12″ x 12″ and are way too large to hide (well) in a tissue holder. They also are not as convenient to use. Get baby washcloths, like these ones.
  • Drop essential oils on them (I use about 3 drops on each cloth). Keep in mind that many essential oils will stain the fabric when dropped straight on like that. If that bothers you then do not get white! I like the patterned ones anyway so you don't get them mixed up with “regular use” washcloths.
  • Fold them into the tissue box holder. Okay, simple step!
  • When you are getting ready in the morning, grab a cloth and wipe down whatever needs it. This is a quick step (30 seconds if you have the cloth right there) and it keeps your bathroom clean without doing much work.
  • The material will hold a scent for a long time so while they are in the tissue holder your clean bathroom will smell like whatever you put on the cloth. There are tons of essential oil options. Are you a citrus fan, flowers, or maybe spices? I get my essential oils from Amazon. You can also find them at natural and whole food stores. However, they tend to be quite a bit more expensive there.

How to Clean a Bathroom Tip: Deep Cleaning

You are also going to need some deep cleaning supplies if want a clean bathroom. The tip above will keep your bathroom looking great on a daily basis, but here are some cleaning supply recipes for the days you need a little bit more.

  • Natural Tub and Shower Cleaner. If you want to clean a bathroom you need a tub and shower cleaner. This recipe is simple and all you have to do is spray it on, wait for 5-10 minutes, then wipe it off. You can also use it on counters and sinks.
  • Homemade Glass Cleaner. Every bathroom I have been in has a mirror so if you want a clean bathroom you are going to need a good glass cleaner. This recipe uses rubbing alcohol, which you might not consider “natural”. I like it in there because it evaporates so quickly (and the smell will dissipate with it leaving the essential oils behind). But, if you want to take the rubbing alcohol out then just use half water/half vinegar instead of the rubbing alcohol.
  • Natural Disinfectant – For obvious reason, if you need to clean a bathroom you will also need a disinfectant. Disinfectants are great when there is illness in the house and to use in a trash can. This disinfectant calls for specific essential oils and it is important that you use those ones. It does smell nice and clean though.

Additional Tips on How to Clean a Bathroom

Here are a few extra bathroom cleaning tips I learned along the way.

  • If you have horribly hard water that leaves a ring in your toilet that just will not come off then try a scour stick. It is a miracle in a box.
  • Put a few drops of essential oil on the inside of your toilet paper roll. It will scent the entire roll and the room as you use it.
  • You can put your shower curtain and liner in a washing machine. If you are starting to get mildew on it then do this!
  • Starting to get a ring around your bathtub or shower? Spray tub and shower cleaner on it and leave it there until the next shower.
  • Want softer, fluffier, towels? Add 1/4 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle of your washer (or put it in the fabric softener section). This makes them extra soft and squishy. It is especially nice for those of you who dry their laundry on a line, like we do. If you use a dryer then you can always use wool dryer balls.

There you have it! You now know how to clean a bathroom with minimal work, while using natural products. Baking soda, Castile soap, essential oils, vinegar and a little bit of rubbing alcohol if you want to use it can really keep your bathroom nice and clean!
